How can I find a hydro power turbine installer?

When installing a small-scale hydro power turbine, finding a qualified professional installer who can offer you the most competitive price will be very important. Unfortunately, there are currently only a small number of installers for this technology so it may be difficult to get quotes from several installers.

How to find installers

To receive income in the form of Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments for the electricity produced by your hydro power project, micro-hydro schemes are now covered by a different process to other small energy systems (like wind and solar power).

Previously you had to use installers accredited through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), but now you need to seek accreditation through the ‘ROO-FIT’ process, via Ofgem. See: or email them on for advice.

In addition, some installers may be members of a professional body, or will have been assessed by NICEIC. See the contacts below.

British Hydropower Association - - 01258 840934
Promotes the use of water power and represents the individuals and organisations involved in the hydropower industry.
Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) - - 020 7313 4800
Trade association representing large and small electrical contractors. Promotes high quality, good value and safe electrical installation. You can find members through the website.
NICEIC: National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting - - 0870 013 0382
Independent non-profit voluntary regulatory body for electricians. Assesses the competence of electricians - you can search the approved list on the website.
Ofgem: ROO-FIT accreditation - -
For accreditation to receive feed-in tariffs for micro-hydro, see ‘Applying for the Feed-In Tariff’ on this website or email the ROO-FIT team on
Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) - - 0207 981 0850
Set up by the Renewable Energy Association. It aims to guarantee a high quality experience for consumers of small scale renewable energy technology.
